The Plastic Injection Molding Process
Injection molding is the most commonly used manufacturing process for the fabrication of plastic parts. A wide variety of products are manufactured using injection molding, which varies greatly in size, complexity, and application. The injection molding process requires the use of an injection molding machine, raw plastic material, and a mold. The plastic is melted in the injection molding machine and then injected into the mold, where it cools and solidifies into the final part. At Step Rapid, the molding process consists of the following basic steps:
- Step 1 – Mold preparation and setup. Opening and trying all movements, Cooling setup, water chilling, mold temperature. Hot runner setting.
- Step 2 – Material preparation: Drying hopper , hygroscopic ( water absorbing ） ABS, PP, PC/ABS, PC. PA66. POM. PPA. PA66+30%GF, PC+12%GF
- Step 3 – Input plastic raw material to Hopper.
- Step 4 – Parameter setting: speed (velocity ),pressure , temperature, cushion, supporting pressure, switching position, backing pressure, cooling time. Cycle time .
- Step 5 – Robotic Arm Setting . Programming
- Step 6 – The mold opens and the part is ejected to begin a new cycle. and proceed Parts visual inspection: short shot, Burr, flash, lusterless, silver streak, whitening, cold slug, burn marks( air trap), sink marks. discoloration, pit, deformation ( Warpage ), and waving.

How long does it take to make an injection mold tool?
This depends on the complexity of the tool design and the type of material the tool is made from. Generally speaking, a very basic square shape made from relatively soft steel such as P20 can be made in less than one week. Very hard steels take longer to cut and to heat treat, while complex shapes or advanced surface textures can require three or more weeks to prepare.
